Three steps forward, two steps back. This may be the story of your 2019 Red Sox. After sweeping three games on the road from first-place Tampa, Boston came home and got flat-out
embarrassed in a double-header sweep by Detroit—
7-4 and 4-2.
Chris Sale could not hold a 2-0 lead in the first game—despite looking better overall (10 strikeouts in five innings of work). Still, the Red Sox offense was lethargic again in both games—with the possible exception of
Xander Bogaerts (who homered
twice in the day game). Overall, this remains a tough team to watch, with uneven performances from starters, relievers and hitters. At 9-15, this season could get ugly
fast. Unless they reel off eight straight wins in the remaining games on this homestand (which would put them
barely over .500), a lot of fans are going to get seriously restless.
