Chris Sale gave up a first-inning home run that stood up for the Athletics—as the Red Sox offense sputtered once again. Sale recovered well, going six innings and giving up just three hits. But the lefty's velocity was again down and his command was spotty. The game might have turned in the ninth inning, but
Xander Bogaerts was cut down trying to stretch a double into a triple. Given the circumstances, you can't fault Bogaerts for being aggressive, but the play just piled more frustration on an already frustrating road trip.
