Sox Sign Thornburg To One-Year, Non-Guaranteed Contract, Will Tender All
The Red Sox surprised many (including us) by signing relief pitcher Tyler Thornburg to a one-year, non-guaranteed contract. The key language here may be "non-guaranteed". Multiple reports indicate that the contract is for $1.75 million—with upwards of $400,000 in 'performance bonuses'. The team also indicated that it will tender contracts to all of the remaining 29 un-signed players—including eleven more who are arbitration-eligible. The 30-year-old Thornburg has been a disaster so far in Boston—either being injured or posting astronomical ERAs. Boston's 40-man roster now sits at 39—with 10 players (including Thornburg) already signed—J.D. Martinez, Mitch Moreland, Eduardo Núñez, Steve Pearce, Dustin Pedroia, Rick Porcello, David Price, Chris Sale and Christian Vázquez.
