Currently, the Red Sox have the following organizational depth at third-base:
MAJORS—
Rafael Devers,
Eduardo Nunez,
Brock Holt,
Marco Hernandez.
MINORS:
Michael Chavis (#1 overall prospect in the organization),
Triston Casas (#2),
Bobby Dalbec (#4),
Brandon Howlett (#13) and
Danny Diaz (#14). So, at the minor league level alone, the club has
five 3B prospects in the Top 15. While the overall
quality of the Boston system is dicey, having so many "hot corner" options might tempt
Dave Dombrowski to part with one (or two) of them—along with another prospect or two and possibly a player off the major-league roster—to get (for example) 24-year-old Seattle closer
Edwin Diaz (and his connected-at-the-hip trade partner
Robinson Cano). Cano also is anchored with a huge remaining price-tag ($120 million) over the next five seasons—which, presumably, Seattle would have to partly eat. So, one can envision a scenario where Boston sends—say—Chavis (and others) to Safeco in such a deal. Now,
Kyle Seager is firmly ensconced at third for the Mariners—but he is 31-years-old and hit just .221 last year in 155 games. Sooner or later, they'll need young talent at the position. Stay tuned!
