We're not exactly sure why, but the Red Sox are apparently close to a deal with the San Diego Padres to acquire 26-year-old right-handed pitcher Colten Brewer. In 2018, Brewer had a cup of (pretty bitter) coffee with the Padres—logging a 5.59 ERA over 9.2 innings of work. His minor-league stats aren't a whole lot better. Across six seasons, Brewer is 18-24 with a 4.05 ERA. So, what gives? There seem to be lots of more attractive relief options in the Boston system—like Darwinzon Hernandez. It's unclear at this point who exactly would be headed back to San Diego in this possible transaction—although it appears it would be a minor-leaguer (or minor-leaguers) not currently on the 40-man roster. Oh, well—stay tuned.
