Diaz/Cano |
Multiple reports now indicate that the Red Sox are
among five teams showing "strong" interest in trading for 24-year-old Seattle closer
Edwin Diaz—whose 57 saves led all of MLB last year. The catch is that the Mariners want to pair Diaz with second-baseman
Robinson Cano (and the remaining $120 million on the former Yankee's five-year contract). What makes this deal interesting for Boston is that Cano could be a sort of
wicked expensive insurance policy in case
Dustin Pedroia cannot be a full-time second-sacker in 2019. Cano can also play first base these days. Without Cano in the mix, any team would have to pay heavily in prospects to get Diaz—prospects that the Red Sox pretty much do
not have at this point. The other four teams in the hunt for this transaction are:
The Evil Ones, Mets, Braves and Phillies (who seem to be in on
everybody this off-season). Stay tuned—this could break pretty quickly.
