Red Sox right-fielder
Mookie Betts has been named as the
Sporting News’ 2018 MLB Player Of The Year. The publication stated that Betts was the "runaway" choice—
garnering 71.1% of the votes from 305 MLB players surveyed. Red Sox teammate
J.D. Martinez finished second in the balloting—pulling in 22.3%. Next on the list was Milwaukee's
Christian Yelich with 12.1% and
Mike Trout with 6.6%. Ballots were sent out by
The Sporting News in early September and a total of 19 players received votes—only one name was allowed per ballot. Mookie becomes just the fourth Boston player to win the award—along with
Ted Williams (
Sporting News Player of the Year five times),
Carl Yastrzemski (1967) and
Roger Clemens (1986). The
Sporting News Player of the Year Award dates back to 1936.
Congratulations, Mookie!
