The Red Sox had somehow fallen behind the hapless Blue Jays 2-1 last night—until
Brock Holt came off the bench in the seventh inning and launched a three-run home run to give Boston a lead it would not relinquish. The
eventual 7-2 win turned your
2018 Carmine Hose into the
first MLB team to clinch a post-season berth. With their 99th win of the season, the Red Sox are guaranteed
at least a
Wild Card spot in October. Of course, they are setting their sights on something much bigger. The next goal is to nail down the division—and the
Magic Number for that achievement is now just nine. Aside from
BrockStar, the key offensive contributors were:
Andrew Benintendi (1-4, R, RBI);
Steve Pearce (1-2, RBI) and
Ian Kinsler (1-4, RBI).
Chris Sale went just one inning in his "opener" start, then completed his tosses in the bullpen. Other than lack of command, everything looked good with the lanky lefty—and he will likely make another start on Sunday against
The Metropolitans.
