It's the old cliche—
"he pitched pretty well, he just made a few mistake pitches". Unfortunately for
Rick Porcello and the Red Sox those mistakes exited Fenway—
and accounted for
all of Cleveland's runs in
an eventual 5-4 loss. In fact, Boston out-hit the Indians 9 to 6—but Tribe pitchers kept the Red Sox in the yard. Porcello was handed a 3-0 lead and proceeded to cough it up in the fifth and sixth innings. Then, after being smacked in the belly by a line drive, he gave up the decisive two-run HR that essentially lost this game. In hindsight, he probably should have been removed from the game before the game-losing blast. The Red Sox left eleven runners on base in the frustrating loss—wasting solid offensive nights by
Xander Bogaerts (3 RBIs),
Andrew Benintendi (RBI) and
J.D. Martinez (2-5, R). Boston had a
chance to win it in the ninth, but fell short to what might be the most dangerous team in the American League. The loss cut the lead in the AL East down to just 9.0 games.
