Trade winds are getting even brisker, as
multiple reports now suggest the Red Sox have been "in recent contact" with the Orioles about a deal for
Manny Machado. Since the Orioles are looking to deal away
both Machado and their other looming free-agent
Zach Britton, Boston could
scoop up two needed pieces in one transaction. Of course, it's unclear what former Red Sox GM—and current Orioles Executive Vice President—
Dan Duquette would want in return for these two "elite" rentals. Presumably, if this deal is consummated,
Xander Bogaerts would have to move back over to third base to accommodate Machado's demand to play shortstop. This would leave
Rafael Devers in the lurch—but the organization may feel that the 21-year-old would be better served with more "seasoning" in Pawtucket (or get dealt to
The Birds as part of the deal). Stay tuned, this could be
huge.
