Rick Porcello took matters—
all matters—into his own hands last night. Not only did he deliver a quality start (6 innings, 2 ERs), but he doubled in three runs off his old teammate and friend
Max Scherzer.
Say what? Porcello barreled one up against (arguably) the best pitcher in baseball?
Yesiree. The only other run Boston needed in
their 4-3 win over the Nationals was the 21st home run of the year by
Mookie Betts. This is not to say that Porcello was
perfect—he gave up two more HRs (both solo shots).
Joe Kelly also coughed up a solo HR in his continuing downward spiral out of the bullpen. In addition to the offensive exploits of
"Pretty Ricky" and Mookie,
Brock Holt came through with a 3-3 night—and is now hitting .304. Overall, this was a fantastic win—which, coupled with
The Empire's loss—puts the Red Sox firmly back in first place on their own.
