On a gorgeous night at Fenway, the Red Sox were pretty much in control the whole game (despite only leading 2-0 for most of the contest). Then, they broke-out late for
a 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers. After newcomer
Steve Pearce homered early (in his first Fenway at-bat) for the 2-0 advantage,
J. D. Martinez settled things in the eighth with a three-run shot—his MLB-leading 28th of the season. Martinez now has an MLB-leading 77 RBIs as well. Despite another annoyingly-high pitch count (105),
Eduardo Rodriguez toughed it through 5.2 innings—giving up no runs and just three hits. The lefty struck out five Rangers. In addition to Martinez and Pearce, multiple-hit games came from
Mookie Betts and
Andrew Benintendi. The win—coupled with a double-header split by
The Evil Ones—gives the Red Sox a 2.5 game-lead in the American League East.
