Thanks to a dumb pique of anger,
Carson Smith will be lost for the rest of the season. After throwing his glove into the dugout after a bad outing in May, Smith went on the disabled list with shoulder issues. Now, it's revealed that—after getting three medical opinions—he will undergo shoulder surgery today in New York. The
specific injury in the glove-throwing incident was a partial dislocation and labrum tear. Smith, of course, was brought aboard in 2015 to be an eighth-inning bridge to closer
Craig Kimbrel. Since the trade, he has had
Tommy John surgery and now this issue—throwing a grand total of 23.2 innings over three years. Apparently, in this case at least, Smith has no one to blame but himself.
