What
could have been one of the most thrilling and meaningful wins of 2018 fizzled into defeat thanks to the over-taxed Red Sox bullpen. Boston overcame a 3-0 deficit against one of the best pitchers in baseball and actually led 6-3—thanks to a mammoth three-run HR by
Xander Bogaerts. But, again, a Red Sox starter could only go six innings and the relief corps finally wilted under the pressure of too much work.
Rick Porcello lasted those six frames—giving up four earned runs.
Heath Hembree gave up another tally and then
Matt Barnes opened the floodgates in the eighth—yielding two runs in
the eventual 7-6 loss. The early runs by
The Carmine Hose were mostly thanks to crappy defense by Seattle—which committed three errors (and arguably a fourth) on the night. In addition to Bogaerts,
Mookie Betts and
J.D. Martinez had multiple hit games. This one
really stung, though, as
The Evil Ones are now percentage points ahead of Boston in the AL East.
