While we're enjoying the 2018 season, it's easy to forget that a big part of this team—closer
Craig Kimbrel—will be a free-agent at the end of the season. Despite some recent hiccups, Kimbrel is clearly still an elite closer who should command a contract that could break the record one signed by
Aroldis Chapman (5 years, $86 million). So far this year, Kimbrel is 1-1 with a 2.20 ERA—with 10 saves and two blown saves. While the Red Sox are still the
odds-on favorites to re-sign Kimbrel (2:1), the Philadelphia Phillies are regarded as the
next most likely landing spot (6:1).
The Fightins have money to burn and Kimbrel would bolster an already solid bullpen. After that, Kimbrel's old club—the Atlanta Braves—slot in at 8:1 odds (don't forget he's an Alabama native). So, enjoy his performances while you can—he
might not be back.
