Over The Years, The Red Sox Seem To Be Prone To May Bullpen Implosions
We went back ten years in the FenwayNation WayBack Machine, and found that at just about this time in 2008 (May 14th to be exact), the Red Sox suffered a series of bullpen meltdowns—not too dissimilar to the ones we saw this month. As the old banner headline shows, Boston relievers were in the midst of blowing three straight games. The latest of those (chronicled in this 5/14/08 issue of FenwayNation) was a brutal 6-3 loss to the Orioles—after surrendering a 3-0 lead. Ring any bells? Back then, it was guys named Lopez, Hansen and Okajima who were the culprits. About the only highlight of the loss was Manny Ramirez making a spectacular catch on old friend Kevin Millar. The more things change, the more they remain the same.
