According to an article by
The Boston Globe's
Alex Speier, there was a very good chance that
Mookie Betts could be delighting the hometown fans at Kauffman Stadium and not Fenway Park. In the 2011 MLB Draft, Mookie was
expecting to be picked by the Kansas City Royals in the early rounds. The previous year, Mookie had played on a summer team run by scouts for the Royals. The club gave the Nashville high-schooler every indication that
he was their guy. When nothing happened in the early rounds, Betts thought,
"I wasn't going to go at all". But, in the fifth round, with the 172nd pick, Boston selected Betts—and Red Sox fans have been grateful ever since.
