When he was drafted in the fifth round out of the University of Maryland in 2016, RHP
Mike Shawaryn was considered a bit of a "long-shot". He was rated a top-notch prospect up until his junior year for the Terrapins. Then, he lost velocity on his fastball and didn't perform nearly as well as he did in his stellar sophomore year. Now, he seems to be putting it all together. While most of the talk in the organization centers on LHP
Jalen Beeks at AAA, Shawaryn deserves some attention as well. Yesterday, he went seven scoreless innings for the Sea Dogs—striking out a season-high eight hitters in
Portland's 7-1 win. He sports an ERA of 2.88. Shawryn scattered just three hits against a tough New Hampshire Fisher Cats squad and walked just one batter. Keep an eye out, this kid may be moving up the ranks quickly.
