Yonny Chirinos Will "Start" Today For Rays In Tampa's Bullpen Experiment
While former Ray David Price will start today's Home Opener for Boston, Tampa manager Kevin Cash will be sending out his "starter-by-committee" bullpen crew—led by reliever Yonny Chirinos. Who, you may ask? Well, Chirinos did perform well in four innings of work against Boston in the first series of the year—giving up just one hit and striking out three. Still, you have to question this approach by Tampa—essentially making the bullpen their fourth starter. This has got to have a negative impact on relievers in August and September if it's kept up much longer. It looks like that will be at least eight weeks—the time that No. 4 starter Nathan Eovaldi is out after having arthroscopic surgery on his elbow to remove the dreaded "loose particles". It should make for an interesting game today!
