Despite the success
Chris Sale enjoyed with
Sandy Leon as his primary 2017 battery mate,
Christian Vazquez will catch the Red Sox ace in the 2018 opener. Manager
Alex Cora's terse comment on the issue went like this,
"We feel comfortable with him [Vazquez] catching Sale, too." Last season, Leon caught 31 of Sale's 32 starts—and the lanky lefty had a 2.63 ERA in those contests. This decision would seem like a sure signal (in addition to the three-year contract extension he just got) that Vazquez is the primary backstop going forward.
