Once we heard that Uber-Agent
Scott Boras was representing
J.D. Martinez, we figured that any deal for him would break the proverbial bank. Now,
ESPN.com's
Jerry Crasnick reports that
Martinez is looking for a deal in the $200 million neighborhood—not a bad place to live! Most
neutral observers think Martinez deserves something on the order of six years and $150 million (or roughly $25 million per year). Martinez slugged 45 HRs last season—while batting .303 and clocking in with an OPS of 1.066. The 30-year-old compiled these impressive numbers in just 119 games split between Detroit and Arizona. Boston has made clear that they need to upgrade their offense—and Martinez would slot in nicely at DH (assuming
Hanley Ramirez is healthy enough to man first base). Otherwise,
Dave Dombrowski may also snare
Gold Glove first-baseman
Eric Hosmer.
