One of the few things pundits have been pretty certain of is that the Red Sox are
not seriously in on 23-year-old Japanese phenom
Shohei Otani. After the $20 million posting fee (which
John Henry can cover), Boston is restricted by MLB's international pool money rules to offer the two-way star no more than their allotted $462,000. Compare that to what
The Evil Ones can offer ($3.25 million), and it should be no contest. And yet,
WEEI.com reports from the GM Meetings that
the Red Sox will be "in the middle of the action" on Otani. The Red Sox would likely utilize Otani as a lefty DH
and as a right-handed pitcher (which may be the player's preference). It's still a pretty long shot that Otani lands at Fenway—but it now sounds like at least there will be a
chance.
