A survey of
ESPN "insiders" (whatever that means) shows that
the Red Sox are the overwhelming choice to sign free-agent J.D. Martinez to a long-term deal. Clearly,
Dave Dombrowski needs to beef-up the power quotient in the Boston line-up and Martinez may be the most efficient way to do that—without giving up big league and/or prospect talent. Despite
UberAgent Scott Boras seeking a $200 million pact for the player he terms the
"King Kong Of Slug", most observers think Martinez will land a contract of six years and about $140 million (or a little over $23 million per year). Stay tuned, as the General Manager meetings start today.
