If you hold aside the
obvious contributions of
Chris Sale (7 innings, 1 earned run) and
Craig Kimbrel (1.1 innings, no hits, no runs, 2 Ks), you have to say
"'twas the rookies that killed the beast" (with apologies to
Carl Denham). In the ninth inning, down 2-1, rookie
Rafael Devers turned around a 102.8-MPH fastball from
Aroldis Chapman and muscled it into the seats to tie the game. Then, in the tenth, rookie (technically)
Andrew Benintendi roped a sharp single to right scoring the eventual winning run in
a thrilling 3-2 victory over
The Bronx Embalmers. The other crucial RBI was delivered on a clutch single by
Jackie Bradley, Jr. The win propelled
The Carmine Hose to a 5.5 game edge over
The Evil Ones in the AL East. Bask in it!
