Pawtucket Red Sox Chairman and Co-Owner
Larry Lucchino appeared on
WEEI's Kirk and Callahan program today and was asked about
the long-term chances of the AAA franchise staying in Rhode Island. Multiple reports have linked the PawSox with locations
outside of that state—including a recent flirtation with Worcester, Massachusetts. At issue is—
basically—who commits to public stadium funding first. Said Lucchino:
"We’re in the midst of Rhode Island politics, which is always a challenge. We are waiting to see if there will be a fall session of the legislature, at which time they would pass enabling legislation to allow Pawtucket to build a ballpark. We’re pretty proud of the long history there and the connections that exist there. It’s an open question. We have to see what the legislator [SIC] does. One thing that has happened, they’ve enabled us to explore other possibilities, and we’re doing that, too." Hmm. Pretty cryptic, eh?
