A little over ten years ago (June 23, 2007) former Red Sox Reliever
Rod Beck passed away unexpectedly at the far-too-young age of 38. In 1999, the Sox sent
Mark Guthrie and
Cole Liniak to the Cubs for Beck. He spent parts of three seasons (1999-2001) with Boston—going 9-5 with a 3.46 ERA in 114 games. On and off in his life, Beck battled substance abuse problems—which likely cost him his life (though no official cause of death was ever established). Had he lived, he'd be 48 years old today. He was a real baseball character, and he is still missed.
