Dave Cameron of
FansGraphs.com makes a
very strong case that—as of today—
Chris Sale should be the choice as 2017's
American League Most Valuable Player. And, according to Cameron,
it's not even close. If your eyes glaze over with any discussion of
"FIP-based WAR" and
"xwOBA", then you probably shouldn't read Cameron's story. Suffice it to say that most
StatGeeks would give Sale the MVP because he has the best
"wins above replacement" in all of baseball—
for any player at any position (+7.4). Simple. He's better at making his team victorious than any other other AL player—including
Mike Trout,
Jose Altuve and
Aaron "Watch Me Whiff" Judge. Of course, there's plenty of time left in the season, and anything can happen to any of these guys. But right now,
"Stickman" has got it—and probably the
Cy Young as well.
