The Red Sox made the deal everyone
expected them to make—
picking up 30-year-old 3B/IF/OF Eduardo Núñez from the San Francisco Giants. In return, Boston will send two minor-league pitchers west—
Shaun Anderson (#18 prospect) and
Gregory Santos. Núñez is hitting .308 with four homers and 31 RBIs this season for the Giants and will be a big offensive upgrade at the position. It's unclear whether he will participate in a platoon with rookie
Rafael Devers, or simply become the every-day starter. Said Red Sox President of Baseball Operations
Dave Dombrowski,
"He'll play a lot for us. He's a very good offensive player. He can play a lot of different positions. He's been swinging the bat very well. He can run. He's versatile for us. Gives us another bat that we feel can help give us some offense, which we do need at this time." Núñez will be available to start against the Royals at Fenway on Friday night.
