Well, it finally happened. The Red Sox announced today that
they have designated 3B Pablo Sandoval for assignment. So, once he clears waivers, and barring a trade (and what crazy team would
want him?), Boston will release him and eat the remaining $48.3 million dollars in dead Panda salary over the next two-plus years. This was arguably the worst free-agent signing (5 years, $95 million) in Red Sox history. Over three seasons,
The Panda played in less than one season's worth of games (161) and hit an abysmal .237. This move and the cutting of
Jhonny Peralta yesterday, clear the way for either: 1.) a trade for a veteran 3B, 2.) a temporary platoon of
Deven Marrero/
Tzu-Wei Lin/
Brock Holt, or 3.) the promotion of
Rafael Devers after a short stint in AAA. The uniform number 48 is again available. Stay tuned.
