It was after 1AM Wednesday. The score was tied 4-4.
Hanley Ramriez stepped to the plate. He already had a double in the marathon contest. But, in the 15th inning, Hanley roped a hanging breaking ball deep into the Boston night—over everything in LF to give the Red Sox a key 5-4 win. "Key" because both the Yankees and Rays also won—keeping the Boston lead in the division at two games over Tampa.
Dustin Pedroia kept up his sizzling July–getting two more hits, scoring a run and knocking in two.
Brian Johnson pitched six serviceable innings—giving up three earned runs.
The Carmine Hose rallied from a 3-1 deficit—with
The Muddy Chicken plating both runs (one on his 5th HR of the year).
Chris Young also homered to put Boston on the board in the fourth inning. The vaunted (and over-worked) bullpen shone
again—going nine innings and giving up just one earned run.
