Gene Conley, who achieved the rare accomplishment of
both NBA
and World Series titles, passed away yesterday at the age of 86. In 1952, he was drafted by the Celtics and played in 39 games that season. Between 1961 and 1963, Conley was a pitcher for the Red Sox. In 1962, he won 15 games for Boston—compiling an ERA of 3.95 (quite an accomplishment on a crappy team). In 1957, Conley was a member of the World Series Champion Milwaukee Braves—just five seasons after he and the franchise vacated Braves Field in Boston. Conley won his
three NBA titles with the Celtics—1958-59, 1959-60, 1960-61.
