Chris Sale did everything he could to hang a "W" in Boston's win column. He hurled eight brilliant innings—giving up just one earned run, while striking out ten. He went 1-3 at the plate—including a lead-off double in the eighth, but his mates failed to plate him. Earlier in the game, he had smacked a sharp, bases-loaded grounder and almost beat out the throw to first (which would have scored two runs). Nevertheless, at the end, it was
a crushing 1-0 loss to a crappy Philly team. The Red Sox offense mustered just five hits—four from normal hitters. Pathetic. And, again, a sign of the inconsistency of this ballclub.
