Wade Anthony Boggs |
Wade Anthony Boggs (AKA,
"Chicken Man") turns 59 years old today. For eleven great seasons he contributed his blood and guts to the Red Sox in pursuit of an elusive World Series Championship. Seeing Boggs weep in the dugout during the Game Seven loss in 1986 is etched in every fan's memory. This guy
cared. In his Red Sox career, Boggs hit an amazing .338—winning batting titles in 1983, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988. His on-base percentage in
Carmine Hose was .428. He collected 2,098 hits while wearing a Boston uniform. His dalliance in New York was taken far too seriously by Sox fans—something that wasn't held against
others who left town for a ring (see
Ray Bourque). Thankfully, his number now sits in a proud spot on the right field façade at Fenway.
Happy birthday, Boggsie!
