Four People Shot At GOP Baseball Practice In Virginia
UPDATE: Shooter has died. In a brazen early-morning attack, an apparent lone gunman opened fire on a baseball practice being held by a team made up of Republican members of Congress. The incident (in Alexandria, Virginia) resulted in four people being shot—including GOP Majority Whip Steve Scalise of Louisiana. Given Scalise's leadership status, there was a Capitol Police detail on the scene that returned fire and subdued the shooter. Scalise was reportedly shot in the hip while manning second base during batting practice. He is said to be undergoing surgery this morning. James T. Hodgkinson—a 66-year old from Illinois—has been tentatively identified as the assailant. The GOP team was practicing for a charity event tomorrow night against Democratic colleagues at Nationals Park. The event raises $600,000 for DC literacy programs and other charities.
