The Red Sox announced that shortstop Xander Bogaerts has been placed on bereavement leave and will miss Friday's game against the Tigers in Detroit. To temporarily fill his spot on the roster, Boston promoted IF Marco Hernandez from AAA Pawtucket. Earlier, the team announced that RP Matt Barnes had also been placed on bereavement leave. RP Noe Ramirez was called up from Pawtucket to fill Barnes' spot.
