Had he lived, Red Sox great
Tony Conigliaro would have turned
seventy-two years old today. The kid from Boston's North Shore was
the quickest to 100 home runs in MLB history—then, he was struck down in his prime by a bean-ball. Just a year and a half after the horrible events of August 18, 1967,
he came back to hit 20 HRs with 82 RBI in 141 games. He was truly one of us—he will
always be one of us. We can only imagine what could have been. Rest in peace, Tony.
