Before a Friday night game against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim,
the Red Sox will retire David Ortiz's number 34 on the right-field façade at Fenway Park. The June 23rd date will mark just the 10th time the team has so honored a
Boston player's uniform number (there's an 11th one representing
Jackie Robinson). The team's official press release makes a fascinating point: Ortiz is Boston's only
three-time World Series champion in the post-WWI era. There's no need to recount the litany of Red Sox records held by Ortiz—now we can just revel in one final team honor that will be bestowed on him in five month's time. Five
years from now, there will be another.
