According to multiple reports,
several teams were interested in Red Sox catcher
Blake Swihart during the recent Winter Meetings in National Harbor, Maryland. However, President of Baseball Operations
Dave Dombrowski would not part with him. Swihart—still just 24 years of age—is still regarded as a top prospect by most objective observers. He has always hit well, but has been slow to gain defensive chops behind the plate. Both
Christain Vazquez (possessing a
ridiculously strong arm) and
Sandy Leon are better defenders—but it's hard to give up on a young talent like Swihart. He was hitting well, when forced to play left field last year—just before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in early June. It will be interesting to see if
'DD' continues to protect Swihart the rest of the off-season.
