Abreu (L); Sale (R) |
While everyone seems to be focusing on a trade that would send
Jackie Bradley, Jr. (and a few top prospects) to Chicago for LHP
Chris Sale,
another possibility has emerged.
A scenario cooked up by ESPN.com's Jim Bowden has Boston shipping off #1 overall MLB prospect
Yoan Moncada to
The Windy City—along with
Eduardo Rodriguez,
Blake Swihart, and fire-baller
Michael Kopech.
In return, Boston nets Sale and 1B/DH
Jose Abreu. The deal has the potential of
killing Boston in the long-run if Moncada becomes what everyone expects he will. However, Sale would give Boston
three Cy Young-level starters (two of them lefties) in the rotation. And, with the 29-year-old Abreu, the Red Sox go a long way toward solving the
"We Don't Have Papi Anymore" conundrum in the middle of the order. Abreu has knocked in
at least 100 runs in all three of his years in major league baseball. While this is intriguing, it—
of course—remains an unlikely deal. Stay tuned, though, the
Winter Meetings begin next Sunday.
