Mike Shawaryn pitching for Maryland |
When the Red Sox drafted RHP Mike Shawaryn out of the University of Maryland in this year's fifth round it was a bit of a gamble. Shawaryn was considered a top-notch prospect up until his junior year for the Terrapins. Then, he seemingly lost velocity on his fastball and performed less effectively than he did in his stellar sophomore year. Now, it appears that Boston may have struck gold with the ex-Terp. In 'Low A' ball so far this year, Shawaryn has given up just four hits and one run over three starts—albeit short starts (7.2 total innings). More importantly, his fastball velocity is back up to the 92-93 range (as an average)—topping out at 95. Keep an eye on this kid as he progresses through the Sox system.
