On Sunday,
the Blue Jays placed catcher Josh Thole on irrevocable waivers—meaning anyone can grab him over the next two days. Thole has pretty much been
R.A. Dickey's personal catcher—and has proven highly adept at handling the knuckleball. This raises the interesting issue of whether the Red Sox should pick up Thole as
Steven Wright's personal backstop for the balance of the year and playoffs. If Boston gets Thole, it will prevent Toronto from re-acquiring him post-September 1st—which is their apparent plan. That would allow Thole to catch Dickey's last few starts—although not allow him to do so in the post-season for the Blue Jays. Considering everything, this seems like an excellent idea for Boston. Do it, Double D!
