Initial optimistic reports about the 2016 return of
Andrew Benintendi seem to be fading. While it
is true that Boston dodged a major bullet on the
extent of the rookie's injuries (sprained knee, but no ligament tears), the
realistic rehab scenario is daunting at best. Multiple reports indicate this morning that
Benintendi will not even engage in any baseball activities for at least the next two weeks. That puts the
start of the rehab process at mid-September. As many have pointed out, the minor league playoffs are over by then, so there is no place to have a meaningful rehab assignment. There's a
chance that Benintendi could make it back for the last half-dozen games or so (and
hopefully the playoffs), but this news is
not promising.
