In the early morning hours,
the Red Sox sent two Single A players (Luis Alejandro Basabe and Jose Almonte) to Arizona for side-arming relief pitcher Brad Ziegler. This, after Boston closer
Craig Kimbrel 'tweaked' his left knee in pre-game warm-ups—just one of a rash of injuries that are popping up on the Sox. The 36-year-old Ziegler—with a radical side-arm delivery—is a master at inducing ground-balls. He has a 2.82 ERA so far this year—and 18 saves. Despite these decent numbers, he has sharply fallen off from his dominant performance of 2015, when he posted a 1.85 ERA. Ziegler will essentially be the new
Carson Smith (lost for the season)—and be inserted into a set-up role in the late innings.
