According to Jeff Ellis of
ScoutingBaseball.com,
the Red Sox had the best overall results among AL East teams in the recent MLB Draft. Ellis particularly likes two of the picks: the first-round selection of pitcher
Jason Groome (who many thought could have been the #1 pick in the
entire draft), and (his favorite pick) fifth-round selection
Michael Shawaryn out of the
University of Maryland. Ellis believes that Shawaryn, earlier viewed as a first-rounder, could turn out to be a "great value". He projects the former Terrapin as a decent "back-end" starter or solid reliever. All in all, it's good to see neutral "experts" showering praise on the work of GM
Mike Hazen,
Dave Dombrowski and the entire scouting operation of the Red Sox.
