Dalton Jones Average Suffers Biggest Drop Ever In June
The Red Sox played their worst baseball of the year in June—ending the month with a dismal 10-16 record. Our June reading of the Dalton Jones Industrial Average reflects that performance—suffering its biggest drop ever. The index dropped a stunning 41.9 points to 70.0. Not surprisingly, starting pitching took the biggest hit—going from a mediocre raw score of 53.4 last month to an incredibly low 19.2 this month. Relief pitching also fell sharply—from 66.8 to 33.6. Ratings of the Red Sox offense pretty much held steady (65.6 down from 68.2 in May), but the team's defense also suffered a blow—sinking from 89.5 in May to to 70.0 today. FenwayNation offers its readers this monthly reading of "The Mood Of The Nation" through our exclusive Dalton Jones Industrial Average—which 'crunches' all of those raw scores into a single Index Value. Named for the all-time Red Sox pinch-hit leader, the average is a composite index of four key metrics: starting pitching, relief pitching, total offense and total defense. The editors invite readers from around the world to weigh in every month on the state of the team. The Index number—and its fluctuation up or down—has proven, over the years, to be a pretty accurate bellwether of actual team status.
