Wouldn't you know it? Today, the Red Sox
bullpen failed the
starters.
Clay Buchholz hurled 6 2/3 solid innings, giving up no earned runs on six scattered hits (and
four double-plays) in
the eventual 4-3 loss. But both
Koji Uehara and
Craig Kimbrel were off their games—imploding in the 8th and 9th to yield four runs. The melt-down was aided by a crucial throwing error by
Josh Rutledge and
two passed balls by
Christian Vázquez—but both relievers had
zero command.
Travis Shaw knocked in
another ninth-inning run in
another abortive comeback. Once again, too little, too late—and we, once again, have a .500 ballclub on our hands.
