Multiple reports now confirm that
the Red Sox have signed former number-one pick David Murphy to a minor-league deal. The 34-year old left-hand hitting outfielder spent seven seasons with the Texas Rangers—after being shipped there for the immortal
Eric Gagne. Murphy was
Theo Epstein's very first draft pick back in 2003—17th overall out of Baylor. He has been particularly effective against right-handed pitching over his decade-long career—with 79% of his at-bats coming against righties. It's hard to see where he could fit in to Boston's outfield plans—unless a trade or two is in the offing. Stay tuned.
