According to Manager
John Farrell,
Joe Kelly is the "leading candidate" to nail down the number five starter slot. However, Farrell
also said this,
"...we can't ever take for granted that injury, performance might cause us to make decisions." Of course, this is the prudent approach, since Kelly's "yo-yo" 2015 season is hardly a confidence-builder. Kelly
does deserve the inside track—since he reeled off wins in
eight consecutive starts from August 1 through September 9. According to
MassLive.com's Christopher Smith, that's the longest winning streak for a Red Sox starter since
Pedro Martinez won
nine in a row way back in 1999. If Kelly and
Rick Porcello can just regress toward the mean, the Sox rotation (with the
huge addition of
David Price) should be significantly stronger than last season.
