Both
José Bautista and
Edwin Encarnacion will become free agents in eleven months. The Blue Jays can't afford both. The Red Sox can't afford to leave a massive void at DH when
David Ortiz departs. Are you seeing a synergy of interests here? Yeah, so is the
rest of the baseball-loving world.
ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick stated yesterday that
"The buzz is already building that one of the two will eventually land in Boston as Ortiz's DH heir at Fenway." It just makes too much sense. Either one of the sluggers would likely continue to pummel AL East pitching in
Carmine Hose. Or would they? Bautista—
who would be 36 on Opening Day 2017—has hit 227 of his 286 career HRs since turning 29. Hmm. Encarnacion—
who would be 34 on Opening Day 2017—started his HR surge at age 27 and can also credibly play first base. So, which one of these offensive behemoths will we get—or is there
another option on the horizon?
