It was reminiscent of
Ray Bourque yielding his number 7 to
Phil Esposito. On Friday,
Brock Holt gave up his number 26 jersey to Wade Boggs. Instead of Bourque's number 77, Holt had his new number 12 underneath—but it was an apt gesture for the upcoming retirement of Red Sox number 26. The moment came at the Red Sox Town Hall Meeting at the Baseball Winter Weekend at Foxwoods. Boggs acknowledged that Fenway Park was "made" for him to hit in—as his late father had told him. Said
The Chicken Man, "
I played The Wall like a fiddle." Indeed he did. On May 26th, before a Thursday night game against the Colorado Rockies, the number 26 will take its place on the right field façade along with 1; 4; 6; 8; 9; 14; 27; 45; and 42. Congratulations, Boggsie!
